While taking a history course at the local university, I stumbled
upon this old character. It was McLeod’s kilt that General Wolfe
was borne away in off the Plains of Abraham during the Seven Years'
War. Born in 1688, McLeod retired to London at the age of 105 after
being present at many of the most important events of the 18th century.
I located an unpublished diary that deals with this campaign in great
detail. I have no idea why the historical should have such a fascination
for me, but it does seem a common interest for many figurative artists.
Perhaps it’s the challenge of empathy at such a distance—
then again, it could be the cool outfits.
